Photos of the Kitchen

Yes, it really was this bright of a yellow and yes, there was a motorcycle left in there.  Wonderful!

View towards the door that is used to get in and out of the place, since it goes towards the driveway and the road.  The range and frig were later removed, as was the counter to the left in this photo.

If you're into motorcycles, this photo is for you.  Not quite rideable, though. Heck if I know what kind it is. It's since been taken to Spokane to my brother-in-law.

Cabinets with their coat of primer.  Good contrast between what was there before (the bright yellow) and what we're working towards, in terms of paint color.  The island in the foreground will be taken out eventually as it's not attached to the floor and we can make better use of the space with a couple of open shelving units.

Cabinets with their first coat of light green paint, as well as a view of the new range.

Another view of the cabinets and one of the new frig.  Yep, does look a bit out of place, being black and new looking, doesn't it?  But it makes ice just fine and that's the main requirement (need ice for my Pepsi). There was a cabinet above the area for the frig, but we had a friend remove it so the new frig could fit in (it's a bit taller than the old one).  Larry likes to be destructive, so this was a good project for him.

My niece, Renee, busy at work painting the fronts of the drawers.

Another view of Renee painting away.  For some reason she would not turn around when she knew I was standing behind her with the camera.  I wonder why?!?

I still need to apply the fern stencil to the cabinet fronts, but since I'm still adverse to painting, it'll be some time before I get to that.  Plus, I'm going to wait until the wood flooring is done (good excuse, right?) as I don't want dust all over the fresh paint.  That excuse works for me!  It's hard to tell in these photos, but the wall is the same light lavender color as in the bathroom.

Another view of the kitchen.  I still need to cover the frig with some of my magnets, but that will also wait until after the flooring is done.  The furnace doesn't work, so we rely upon space heaters to warm the place up.

Here's where the flooring is cut up.  Lots of dust is created, so I'm not doing too much more in the kitchen until all of the flooring is complete.  I do need to put away a few boxes, but that's about all I can do for now.  The open shelving units will go up once the flooring is done, as I don't feel like dusting everything on those shelves, unless I really have to.

The island in the kitchen has been removed (and cut up and taken to the dump) and replaced with 4 open shelving units.  Lots of product placement of Pepsi!  I can wad more on these shelves than I ever could in that island, so these are far more useful to me.  Boris is hanging out hoping for a handout, of course.

Okay, I got tired of waiting till Dirk was through cutting up the flooring sections and creating dust, so I stenciled in the ferns one afternoon (same with putting up the shelving units - got tired of waiting).  Plus, I wanted to get them done before my sister-in-law came into town for a rubber stamp convention.  Hubby came home that day and freaked over how many ferns were on the cabinet.  I told him that I warned him, but he said he thought there would only be a few per cabinet. Silly man!

I used 3 different colors of green for the stencil, going in all different directions.  Heck, when you see ferns outside, there's always lots and lots of them together, which is what I wanted to replicate here (or at least the idea of lots of ferns).  Ferns are one of the many things I missed about the Seattle area when we moved to Spokane (too dry over there for them; there's a few ferns growing wild, but not too many).  And now I have them in my kitchen!

I also put a line of ferns along the back wall of the kitchen, as I felt it needed a bit more there than just lavender paint.  However, I did it after I put down the first color of ferns and leaned into the cabinets under the sink before the paint was dry.  Fortunately I realized it before I moved sideways and I didn't blur any of the paint.  Whew!  Note the product placement of the Pepsi cans - now to get a kickback from Pepsico.  HA! And yes, those our are toothbrushes on the counter. The bathroom sink doesn't work and hasn't for many years! We'll get it taken care of, eventually.

I really do enjoy my kitchen ferns.  And if I don't like them a few years down the road I can paint over them, as this is my experimental house, in terms of paint and decorating.  I've never been able to do this before, so I'm having great fun with it.
